The standing body of the Institute of Yi Nationality Studies is its office, with a staff of ten, including one researcher, five associate research fellows, three research assistants and one provincial excellent expert. It consists of six internal bodies, namely, the institute of ancient books, the institute of information processing, the institute of Yi people’ history and culture, the institute of Yi people’s economical and social development, the center of documentation, the research center of national costumes in northwest Guizhou. The museum of Yi people’s culture is being built now.
As the only research institute of Yi studies in Guizhou, the institute turns on the path toward collecting, organizing, translating and studying the Yi people’ ancient books. And it aims at studying the information processing of Yi Characters, Yi people’s history and culture, and Yi people’s literature. So far the research of Yi people’s ancient books and the exploitation of its software has become a preponderant and characteristic discipline, which has been praised for its key position in China’s Yi nationality studies.
Now the institute has the research center of Guizhou national ancient works, the bilingual service station of national languages and Chinese, the educational center of excellent campus culture. Its innovative team of science – the team which devotes to the digitization of Yi people’s ancient books – is a significant force in protecting and studying the ancient books.
The institute has successfully taken charge of or undertaken five projects of national social funds and publishing funds, eleven provincial and ministerial projects, and more than ten prefecture-level projects. The team have published more than twenty books, such as the Brief History of Shuixi, the Dictionary of Yi Characters, the History of Yi people’s Literature in Guizhou, the Appreciation of Wei Book, the Research of Yi People’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Studies of Yi Nationality, etc.. The team have also published more than one hundred academic theses and have been awarded more than twenty prizes for their research achievements.
